How can we transform a building to function as a smart machine, by repurposing existing resources? AMC: A Free Machine builds upon the view that by 2060, consumerism as we know exists no more. We’ll have to build with existing resources and materials. Buildings will function as a smart machines, making use of all the energy that is available for free. Facades are more than a static and aesthetic skin: they serve as efficient, automated, and adaptable devices. A new facade is proposed that transforms the Amsterdam Medical Centre into a machine-like building, that operates on natural, existing, and freely available resources. The existing facade is demounted and its elements are repurposed to create a steel structure in which panels of 1150x2000mm are placed. Through automated sliders, these panels are able to move up or down, and can rotate up to 45 degrees. Three types of panels provide different functions: (1) photovoltaic electricity generation, (2) reflecting light deeper into the building, (3) creating a cooling and healing environment through foliage.
