Golfslag is the redesign of The New Institute in Rotterdam, and consists of two interlocking parts. The first part is a massive and straightforward concrete wall, that acts as empty canvas that can be manipulated accordingly by an artist, to highlight what’s going on inside the museum or simply to make a statement. At the foot of the wall is a square, that slopes down and invites visitors to enter the museum. Once passed through the wall, visitors enter the atrium of the museum: the upslope of an enormous wave. This wave is the other part of the building: a glistering semi-transparent structure that clashes into the wall, which houses the public parts of the Institute. The wave materialises with interlocking triangular panels, that are either glazed, photovoltaic, or closed. Golfslag is a formal statement about questioning the norms, both in art, architecture, and digital media, inherently corresponding with the nature of The New Institute.
