Working with Artificial Images
2024 / Rotterdam & Tilburg, Netherlands
This lecture and workshop was given at the architecture faculty at Fontys Academy of Arts in Tilburg.
I have developed a lecture and hands-on workshop on AI image making for students. I had the pleasure of teaching this in the architecture faculty at Fontys Academy of Arts in Tilburg.
In the past years I’ve immersed myself in researching and applying AI within architectural practice, integrating the newest developments into daily workflows. Sharing these insights and techniques with students was both fun and a great opportunity for further exploration and learning.

Working with Artificial Images
Now that AI can generate images “just like that”, we should ask ourselves what this means for the field of architecture, a discipline that largely revolves around the visualisation of the unbuilt. How does the presence of AI impact the way we produce and perceive these images? And as an architect, how can you use these technologies to help you shape your unique vision?
This lecture and workshop will explore the evolving role of architectural visualisation in the context of AI developments. We will examine how AI-generated imagery fits within the broader process of architectural production—whether it's a generative tool, a new method for rendering, or a collaborative medium that challenges traditional image-making approaches. Together, we'll explore the potential issues, opportunities, and the need for a new way of thinking in visual storytelling. Through hands-on experimentation, you'll learn how to create images that not only communicate your ideas in a stunning fashion, but also help you express yourself as an emerging architect.
