Pit!

Pit! Is a future-proof urban planning exercise for the Merwe-Vierhavens (M4H) district in Rotterdam. During our research, we found a lot of innovative initiatives to be already present in the area, giving it a distinct character. Building upon this, Pit! has the intention of planting even more ‘seeds’ and flourishing those already present. With this, Pit! sows the essential building blocks of organic growth through three interventions: the Knowledge Centre, The Mobility Hub, and Visible Sustainability. These interventions are held together underneath one safeguarding structure, the System, that organises the area through a bottom-up approach that allows for monumental recognizability as well as surprising diversity. Pit! was presented in a keen presentation that alternated speakers, videos, and live demonstrations, that revealed how this urban vision could end up changing the Merwe-Vierhavens. Pit! is the result of a “management game” design studio, in which a team of 9 students, each with their distinct role derived from a real-world profession, were to negotiate and develop a coherent plan together, all the while keeping true to their role’s values and desires.

Honourable Mention.
